Lesson 1 Plan Saturday, October 18, 2019
Pre preparation: Get the folder from the front desk (Maria if she is there). The roster will be in the folder for this class and Animals that Attack and Batman as well.
You will need to go to the website and set it up on the computer. (I am hoping they provided you with the link).
Step 1: Take attendance on both sheets, put one in the folder and turn in one to the front desk. Ask if there is anyone whose name you did not call. If their name was not called, check their id badge to make sure they are in the correct class. If they are not, you can have the teacher assistant take them to the correct class. If they are in the right class and their name is not on the roster, please add them to the list. If students come in and are scattered across the whole auditorium, have them move in closer to the front so we can all be together.
Step 2: Tell them...Welcome to class everyone! During Electrified, we will take a look at electricity, alternate power sources like batteries, static electricity, solar power and how electricity changed things for us. We will do experiments, explore and learn.
Step 3: Turn off the lights....turn them back on...If the room is dark, we just turn on a switch and we have light. (NOTE: you will be in the auditorium so it may be harder to do that...so that is optional) It's sooo easy! But have you ever wondered what it was like BEFORE electricity? Ask students to tell you other sources of light (examples could include flashlights, kerosene lamps, solar powered lights, matches, lighters, light on your phone, etc.) You could write the ideas on the board if you wish (if there is a board in the auditorium.
We take lights for granted. Ask students to give a thumbs up or thumbs down if they have ever had the lights go out where they live or work? It really makes you appreciate the light.
Step 4: So we are going to start today by looking at some videos about Life without electricity. (Show the videos under lighting and electricity Watch 1, 2, 3 and 4 as they are numbered. After they watch video 1 and 2, ask them what they used for light before electricity.
Step 5: Watch video 3 & 4...ask them how they think electricity was different back in the 20s compared to today
Step 6: "Now we're going to take a look at light bulbs...be ready to tell who invented lightbulbs and one new fact you learned. Watch A, B, C, D, E and F. Since class is only 1 hour, watch the time and show the videos as time permit. (If you would leave a note to let me know (by letter or number as listed) that you weren't able to show. Thanks so much!)
If you had MORE time left, you could show some of the other videos.
Step 7: Let class know it is time to go. Please ask them if they know where they need to go to their next class. They will have their class listed on their id badge.
